Katonah, N.Y.--Electric vehicle (EV) drivers now have a new convenient fast charging location in downtown Katonah, less than a mile off Interstate 684 and close to numerous services in the quaint historic hamlet in northeastern Westchester County. The New York Power Authority (NYPA) installed the federally funded EVolve NY station so New York State could service more drivers through its fast-charging network and further its efforts to encourage EV adoption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.

“Communities, like Katonah, that promote cleaner transportation options serve local residents, attract eco-conscious visitors, and showcase a commitment to sustainability and innovation," said Justin E. Driscoll, Power Authority president and CEO. “This conveniently located high-speed charging station in downtown Katonah, minutes from the highway, illustrates how the Power Authority and the Town of Bedford collaborated to make it even easier for travelers in the Hudson Valley region to drive electric.”

The new EVolve NY charging station in Katonah is off Exit 6 on I-684. The site is one of the largest fast charging sites in the Hudson Valley with six units available. A six-unit station is also located at the North County Shopping Center in Goldens Bridge and a third location will soon open in downtown White Plains. Additional Hudson Valley locations are operational in LaGrangeville and Kingston.

NYPA’s EVolve NY network now has 232 chargers statewide at 56 sites.

Historic Katonah, one of three hamlets in the Town of Bedford, is an easy stop off of I-684 or the Saw Mill River Parkway. The hamlet is a great location for shopping, dining or a stroll and is a convenient option for EV drivers to charge up on a road trip upstate, to New England or while traveling south to NYC and beyond.

“As a proud New York State Climate Smart Community with a strong dedication to economic vitality, Bedford is excited to welcome new fast chargers in Katonah,” said Bedford Town Supervisor Ellen Calves. “This initiative is a win-win—promoting sustainability while boosting opportunities for local businesses by increasing foot traffic in the hamlet. We are honored to be part of this important program and look forward to welcoming EV drivers to experience Katonah."

While charging, visitors may stroll around Katonah to pick up treats, coffees and takeaways or stop in a locally owned boutique, art gallery or book store on Katonah Avenue. History buffs and visitors looking to get in some steps can plug in and walk around Katonah to experience nineteenth-century Victorian gingerbread houses, lively parks and the charming Gazebo.  A historic walking tour can be followed at https://www.katonahvis.org/katonah-village-history/historic-katonah-self-guided-tours/. With the right timing, visitors can listen to music in the gazebo or attend popular Katonah events such as the annual Fire Department Parade, Art Crawl or Sidewalk Sale.

The Katonah location supports New York’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program corridor buildout and is EVolve NY’s 11th location supporting the program.

The EVolve NY Katonah site includes six chargers located in a town-owned lot at 252 Katonah Ave., directly next to the Katonah Shopping Center. On the Electrify America network, the hub consists of six fast chargers with CCS connectors rated at up to 350 kilowatts. The units are an easy walk to the many restaurants, shops, galleries, and coffee shops in the downtown area.

The new Evolve NY Direct Current Fast Chargers can charge capable electric vehicles in as little as 20 minutes.

NYPA is collaborating with the New York State Department of Transportation to complete the first phase of the NEVI program to build out the state’s EV charging network along major highways so drivers can more easily charge when traveling long distances. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration and supported by the U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation. The goal is to meet the NEVI criteria for DCFC locations at least every 50 miles along the state’s designated electric vehicle alternate fuel corridors.

In 2022, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation adopted regulations requiring all new passenger cars, pickup trucks and SUVs sold in New York State be zero emission by 2035. The regulations will help decarbonize the state’s transportation sector and advance the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which calls for emissions to be reduced 85 percent by 2050.

State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, “As New York State continues efforts to build a network of electric vehicle charging stations, we are pleased to join our state partners in offering a new location for motorists to charge their vehicles in downtown Katonah.  This is a true win-win for motorists, the environment and the hamlet of  Katonah.”

NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris said, “New York continues to lead on building out a robust network of electric vehicle chargers and this new infrastructure in Katonah provides both residents and visitors with access to a quick charge when needed. Comprehensive efforts to increase statewide clean transportation charging options helps increase electric vehicle adoption while improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers.”

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said, “Westchester County is committed to expanding access to EV charging infrastructure, making it easier and more convenient for residents and visitors to embrace clean transportation.  The new fast-charging station in Katonah is a major step forward in reducing our carbon footprint and supporting a greener future. We thank the Town of Bedford and the New York Power Authority for bring this resource to our communities.”

Senator Pete Harckham said, “I congratulate Katonah in the Town of Bedford on being the latest municipality to receive NYPA’s EVolve NY fast-charging stations at its newest site statewide. This is another important step forward in fighting climate change and transitioning to zero-emission vehicles that will benefit our communities with new jobs, cleaner air and a healthier environment for us all.”

Assemblymember Chris Burdick said, "This is a proud moment for the Town of Bedford and the State of New York through NYPA. We all need to forge ahead to meet our climate goals, and collectively we can get it done. With transportation accounting for 50% or more of greenhouse gas emissions, New York is aggressively building out its EV charging station infrastructure, which is so vital to encouraging the switch over to electric vehicles. Congratulations Bedford and NYPA!"

Aaron Young, senior manager, commercial networks & fleets, Electrify America, which operates and maintains the site, said, “Electrify America is proud to support New York Power Authority in accelerating the rollout of Hyper-Fast charging stations in New York.  The new charging station in Katonah offers EV drivers a fast and convenient charging option for local and longer distance travels.”

New York State currently hosts more than 2,100 public fast chargers at more than 500 locations, according to the U.S. Dept. of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center. The chargers range in speed from 25 kW to 350 kW, which equates to varying charging times.
