NYPA Land Provides Lots of Recreation Opportunities

NYPA land is widely available for hiking, boating, fishing, swimming, and sports of all kinds. From the New York State Park system to the Schoharie County Bluebird Society, many state and local entities work with NYPA to manage the recreation areas. Here are a few of our popular recreation sites:

New York Power Authority Fishing Piers to Open for the Season on June 22*

At Blenheim-Gilboa

  • Visitors Center & Lansing Manor Museum, operated, maintained and staffed by NYPA (currently closed)
  • Mine Kill State Park and Overlook, managed by NY State Parks
  • Archery Hunting, managed by NY Department of Environmental Conservation
  • The Long Path, managed by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference
  • Bluebird Trail, managed by the Schoharie County Bluebird Society

At Hawkins Point
Adjacent to Hawkins Point on Barnhart Island. Both sites allow you to use the trails and take advantage of outdoor recreation:

  • Visitors Center (currently closed)
  • Robert Moses State Park (currently closed for the season) offers wooded campsites and cabins, a marina and boat launch, some of the best fishing in the Northeast, picnic areas, a swimming beach, tennis courts and;
  • Nicandri Nature Center (currently closed) with its amazing indoor exhibits, beautiful outdoor trails and more

At Niagara

  • Robert Moses Fishing Pier**
  • Lewiston Reservoir Fishing Access – south side
  • Lewiston Reservoir Fishing Access – north side
  • Visitors Center/Power Vista at Robert Moses Power Dam (currently closed)
  • Niagara Intakes/Upper Niagara River Observation Area

*Update: Because of public health and safety concerns, including frequent high water, fishing piers have remained closed. On Monday, June 22 (weather and water levels permitting) NYPA's fishing facilities, including the fishing pier at the base of NYPA's Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant will open for the season. The fish cleaning station and handicap access elevator at the dam site will also be available at that time.

The fishing piers near the Upper Mountain Fire Company at the Lewiston Reservoir and at the water intakes along the upper Niagara River will also open for the season June 22. All are open daily from dawn to dusk and are admission free. Users should maintain adequate social distancing and follow New York State recommendations regarding use of masks.   • NYPA's Niagara fishing facilities (**including the fishing pier at the base of NYPA's Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant) is generally open for the season after April 1, or after the ice boom has opened and ice runs have cleared the lower river at the power plant. They will close under icy conditions, unsafe water levels, and typically by December 1. After a pause, the fishing piers are scheduled to open for the season on June 22, 2020*
  • The fish cleaning station at Robert Moses is available as long as temperatures remain above freezing. Fishing also available near the Upper Mountain Fire Company at the Lewiston Reservoir and at the Water Intakes along the upper Niagara River. All are open daily from dawn to dusk, and are admission-free.
  • Parking and Access: for the pier at the base of NYPA's Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant, parking is available both near the pier and at the top of the hill (next to the roadway that provides access to the pier). Weather and water conditions permitting. Visitors can use the stairs or the handicapped access elevator to get from the parking level of the fishing pier to the water level.
