New York Power Authority Holds Public Hearings on Draft Strategic Plan for Expanding Renewable Energy Resources Throughout New York State

  

In-Person Hearings Scheduled for Niagara Falls, Binghamton, Albany, 

Manhattan and Long Island

  

Virtual Hearing on November 21 Offers New Yorkers Opportunity for 

Online Public Comment

  

WHITE PLAINS—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will hold public hearings on its Renewables Draft Strategic Plan throughout November to gather community feedback and offer the opportunity for New Yorkers to share input. The draft Strategic Plan is open for public comment via NYPA’s website. Comments will be accepted through Dec. 9, 2024.

  

NYPA will hold in-person public hearings at five locations across the state in addition to one virtual public hearing with morning and evening sessions to gain input from interested stakeholders, including community members and elected officials. Feedback received through the public hearing and stakeholder engagement process will be incorporated in the final Strategic Plan that will be presented to the NYPA Board of Trustees for approval at its December board meeting. The final Strategic Plan will be published on the Power Authority’s website and submitted to the Governor and the Legislature by Jan. 31, 2025.

  

NYPA will hold the following public hearings:

  

• Thursday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., 6-8 p.m. – Niagara Power Vista, 5777 Lewiston Road, Lewiston
• Thursday, Nov. 14, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., 6-8 p.m. – Holiday Inn Downtown, 2-8 Hawley Street, Binghamton
• Monday, Nov. 18, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., 6-8 p.m. – Albany Capital Center, 55 Eagle Street, Albany
• Wednesday, Nov. 20, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., 6-8 p.m. – John Jay College, Gerald W. Lynch Theatre, 524 West 59^th Street, New York City
• Thursday, Nov. 21, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., 6-8 p.m. – Virtual Hearing via Zoom. Register online. 
• Monday, Nov. 25, 1-3 p.m., 6-8 p.m. – Suffolk Community College, 1001 Crooked Hill Road, Brentwood

  

Since Governor Kathy Hochul approved NYPA’s expanded authority to build renewable energy projects on May 3, 2023, NYPA has advanced its plans for the development of new renewables. NYPA has established new business structures, filled key personnel roles, made required regulatory filings, obtained tax rulings, approved the formation of a renewables subsidiary, issued a $100 million bond for new renewable energy projects, and garnered other necessary information and resources to advance the first tranche of projects.

  

NYPA has identified 40 renewable projects—at least one in every region of the state—representing a total pipeline capacity of more than 3.5 GW. Further examination of the proposed projects, including their economics, community impacts and real-estate considerations, will determine their viability in the build out of the Power Authority’s renewable portfolio.
