Fishing Pier at Base of NYPA Project will be Closed April 3 and 4

LEWISTON—The fishing pier at the base of the New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) Niagara Power Project will be closed to the public on April 3 and 4.

A cable car that runs across the lower Niagara River from Lewiston to Queenston, Ontario, is being permanently removed along with its cable. The 715-foot steel cable is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Environment Canada and was installed in 1973 to monitor the flow of water in that section of the river. Since other means are being used to monitor the water flow, the cable is no longer needed and is being removed as a safety measure.

Access to the fishing pier will be closed for safety reasons while the cable is removed. The U.S. Coast Guard will establish a temporary perimeter in the river within the work area that will prevent boat travel upstream of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. The river shoreline can still be accessed using the stairway at the lower fisherman’s parking lot at the power project

NYPA and Ontario Hydro have shared maintenance duties for the cable’s upkeep and NYPA is contracting Hohl Industrial Services, a Buffalo firm, to undertake the cable’s removal.
