On June 23, 2025, Governor Kathy Hochul directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and the Department of Public Service (DPS) to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of no less than one gigawatt of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities in upstate New York.
This initiative will provide clean, reliable, around-the-clock power to support the state’s economic growth and clean energy goals while shielding New Yorkers from long-term volatility and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. This project will complement the state’s effort to build renewables and retire aging fossil plants, and is a critical step toward energy security, affordability and sustainability built by and for New Yorkers.
