UTICA – The John S. Dyson New York Energy Zone, New York Power Authority’s new state-of-the-art science center located next to the Utica Zoo, is fully reopened in time for its first holiday season including some expanded hours that correspond to the zoo’s upcoming Bright Nights at the Utica Zoo holiday event.

The New York Energy Zone is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the following holiday exceptions: Nov. 25-26, Dec. 24-25 and 31, and Jan. 1. In addition to its normal operating hours, the facility will remain open until 7:30 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from Nov. 27 through Dec. 19 in partnership with Bright Nights at the Utica Zoo. Admission to the New York Energy Zone is always free.

The New York Energy Zone is a fully-immersive and hands-on experience designed for visitors of all ages. It guides guests on a powerful journey through the past, present, and future of electricity and New York State’s part in it. Visits to the 15,000 square-foot facility kick off with an eye-popping 3-D movie about famed inventor Nikola Tesla and his contributions to modern electricity systems. This sets the stage for more than 40 interactive displays and games. These range from flying a drone to checking transmission lines to operating a power plant and building a table-top microgrid.

Tours can be scheduled by calling 315-792-8720 or emailing EnergyZone@nypa.gov. Walk-ins are also welcome.
