ALBANY, N.Y—The New York Power Authority (NYPA), New York State Canal Corporation (Canals) and the Town of Niskayuna celebrated the opening of a newly refurbished boat launch along the Mohawk River at Lock E7, across the river from the Vischer Ferry Power Project. Officials from NYPA, Canals and the Town celebrated the project with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
The boat launch—located at 1280 Lock 7 Road—is publicly accessible and can be used to launch small powerboats, pontoon boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft such as canoes and kayaks.
NYPA Regional Manager and SVP Timothy Rich said, “The newly refurbished boat launch in Niskayuna is a reflection of the Power Authority’s commitment to be a good neighbor in its host communities. The new boat launch will provide boaters free, direct access to the Mohawk River and the iconic Erie Canal.”
Niskayuna Town Supervisor Erin Cassady-Dorion said, “The refurbished boat launch is a perfect example of how the Town of Niskayuna continues to work with community partners to enhance our shared spaces. The Mohawk River is a treasure that sits in our backyard, and now with the improved access, residents and visitors alike will be able to better enjoy all the recreational opportunities our waterways have to offer. We are grateful to the New York Power Authority and the New York State Canal Corporation for their partnership and continued commitment to community improvement projects like this one.”
New York State Canal Corporation Executive Deputy Director Rebecca Hughes said, “We are grateful to our municipal partners in Niskayuna and are thrilled that this beloved community resource is available once again so that the public can recreate on the Erie Canal.”
The Vischer Ferry Project is an 11.8-megawatt hydroelectric facility located on the Mohawk River, approximately 14 miles upstream from its confluence with the Hudson River. The Vischer Ferry Dam spans the Mohawk River between Vischer Ferry in Saratoga County and Niskayuna in Schenectady County.
