MASSENA—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) today announced that the Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center in Massena is now open daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for the summer season.

Beginning Tuesday, July 1, the Power Authority will host its “Beat the Heat” summer movie series at Hawkins Point on Tuesdays throughout the season. Additionally, the Power Authority will host STEM programming at the visitors center every Wednesday beginning July 2.

On Thursdays in July and August, members of the public will be able to experiment with the visitors center’s new 3-D printer and take home their creations.

Additionally, the Hawkins Point Visitors Center will host shows featuring naturalist Zowie Auger throughout the summer. During her shows, guests will be able to interact with reptiles and amphibians and learn about the vital role they play in our ecosystem.

The shows, Her-Petology, are scheduled for July 10, July 24, August 7 and August 21.  All shows will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Hawkins Point, the admission-free visitors center for the St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project, offers many hands-on exhibits on electricity, energy, the environment, and area history. Visitors can hop aboard a bicycle generator and turn pedal-power into electricity or have a hair-raising experience with static electricity using the Van de Graaff generator.

The visitors center also features an audio-visual terrain map that charts the course of the mighty St. Lawrence River between Ogdensburg and Massena. A wood-carved map detailing Jacques Cartier’s exploration of the St. Lawrence River is also on display at Hawkins Point. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the project’s power dam. A community room is also available for public use.
