New York Power Authority Completes Installation of LED Fixtures
at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum
Energy-Efficient Lighting Upgrades Result in Energy Cost Savings and
Emissions Reductions
WHITE PLAINS—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) today announced the completed installation of energy-efficient LED lights throughout the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
NYPA President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll said, “NYPA is proud to have supported efforts to improve the energy efficiency of the September 11 Memorial & Museum, which stands in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the 2001 terrorist attacks. The new lighting fixtures are among the latest energy efficiency improvements implemented by NYPA to support the state’s decarbonization goals.”
Nearly 1,700 fluorescent lighting fixtures were replaced with energy efficient LED fixtures as part of the $1 million project, lowering annual electricity and maintenance costs and reducing the building’s annual carbon emissions by nearly 65 metric tons—the emissions equivalent of burning more than 7,300 gallons of gasoline. The new lights were installed in the museum’s hallways, corridors and maintenance rooms.
Edward Sidor, senior vice president of facilities, design and capital improvement at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum said, “We are deeply grateful to NYPA for its partnership in this essential project and through it, for helping to power our promise to never forget well into the future."
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum, located at the World Trade Center in New York City, tells the story of 9/11 through media, narratives, and a collection of monumental and authentic artifacts, presenting visitors with personal stories of loss, recovery, and hope. The museum opened in 2014.
Power Authority support for the lighting project, which began in September 2021, stems from the Lower Manhattan Energy Independence Initiative, a $25 million fund established by New York State in 2006 to provide support to lower Manhattan with energy efficiency improvement projects in the area.
Last November, Governor Hochul announced the completed installation of 6,500 energy efficient LED lights at One World Trade Center.

New York State's Nation-Leading Climate Plan
New York State's nation-leading climate agenda calls for an orderly and just transition that creates family-sustaining jobs, continues to foster a green economy across all sectors and ensures that at least 35 percent, with a goal of 40 percent, of the benefits of clean energy investments are directed to disadvantaged communities. Guided by some of the nation’s most aggressive climate and clean energy initiatives, New York is on a path to achieving a zero-emission electricity sector by 2040, including 70 percent renewable energy generation by 2030, and economywide carbon neutrality by mid-century. A cornerstone of this transition is New York's unprecedented clean energy investments, including more than $55 billion in 145 large-scale renewable and transmission projects across the state, $6.8 billion to reduce building emissions, $3.3 billion to scale up solar, more than $1 billion for clean transportation initiatives, and over $2 billion in NY Green Bank commitments. These and other investments are supporting more than 165,000 jobs in New York’s clean energy sector in 2021 and over 3,000 percent growth in the distributed solar sector since 2011. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, New York also adopted zero-emission vehicle regulations, including requiring all new passenger cars and light-duty trucks sold in the State be zero emission by 2035. Partnerships are continuing to advance New York’s climate action with nearly 400 registered and more than 100 certified Climate Smart Communities, nearly 500 Clean Energy Communities, and the State’s largest community air monitoring initiative in 10 disadvantaged communities across the state to help target air pollution and combat climate change.
