NYPA to Close Hinckley Reservoir Boat Launch for the Season on October 1
UTICA—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) today announced that the Hinckley Reservoir boat-launching ramp will be closing for the season, effective October 1.
NYPA will also remove the directional and warning buoys located near the boat launch, power dam spillway and other areas in the vicinity of its Gregory B. Jarvis Power Plant, a small 9,000-kilowatt hydroelectric facility that straddles Oneida and Herkimer counties.
The reopening of the Hinckley Reservoir boat launch is tentatively planned for May 2025, before the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Located along the north side of the reservoir on Route 365, the boat launch was built in 1985 by NYPA as a recreational benefit in connection with the construction of the Jarvis Power Plant. NYPA also provided parking spaces for cars and boat trailers, and a turnaround area. The launch is comprised of concrete planks that extend 200 feet into the reservoir for ease of access to boaters.
The Jarvis Power Plant, which features two turbine-generators, began operating in 1986 and is named in honor of astronaut Gregory Jarvis from the Mohawk Valley who was killed that year aboard the space shuttle Challenger.
