New York Power Authority Hosts STEM Events at the

New York Energy Zone

UTICA—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will host a series of free STEM workshops, at the John S. Dyson New York Energy Zone between Monday, April 22, and Friday, April 26. The workshops will run between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Energy Zone workshops will use STEM kits from Infento, Snap Circuits and KidSpark. The Infento kits include modular parts to build scooters, bicycles, and tricycles; the Snap Circuits kits include magnetic tiles and building sets; and the kits from KidSpark include engineering and robotics building blocks. The STEM events are scheduled as follows:

  • Monday: KidSpark (ages 8 to 11)
  • Tuesday: Snap Circuits (ages 8 to 11)
  • Wednesday: Infento (ages 11 to 14)
  • Thursday: Infento (ages 11 to 14)
  • Friday: Snap Circuits (ages 8 to 11)

The workshop sizes are limited and guests are encouraged to call the Energy Zone at 315-792-8720 to reserve a space. Parents or guardians are expected to remain on-site during their children’s visit.

NYPA will also screen a feature-length movie at the Energy Zone on Wednesday, April 24, at 2 p.m. Additionally, arts and crafts activities will run throughout the week.

The New York Energy Zone is a fully immersive and hands-on science center designed for visitors of all ages, guiding guests on a powerful journey through the past, present, and future of electricity. Visits to the 15,000 square-foot facility kickoff with an eye-popping 3-D movie—directed by legendary filmmaker Douglas Trumbull—about Nikola Tesla and his contributions to modern electricity systems. In addition, there are more than 40 interactive displays and games that include flying a drone, checking transmission lines, operating a power plant, and building a tabletop microgrid.

The NY Energy Zone is located next to the Utica Zoo, off the Memorial Parkway on Utica Zoo Way. The Energy Zone is open every day between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and admission is always free.
