New York Energy Zone to Host Free Earth Month Celebration on Saturday, April 29

UTICA, N.Y.— The John S. Dyson New York Energy Zone, New York Power Authority’s (NYPA)’s state-of-the-art science center located next to the Utica Zoo, will conduct a free youth-oriented community event this weekend in celebration of April as Earth Month. The event will be held Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

In addition to the more than 40 interactive exhibits and 3-D movie permanently on display at the New York Energy Zone, there will be numerous special activities and giveaways to entertain and educate guests, including:

•         A pollinator workshop, along with crafts and fun, provided by the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Child Care Council of Oneida County

•         An Earth Day cinch bag giveaway

•         Opportunities to learn about the pollinator gardens coming soon to the New York Energy Zone and Utica Zoo, courtesy of NYPA

•         A flowering pollinator seedling giveaway

•         “Plantable” seed paper light bulb to create your own wildflower garden

•         A movie about national parks in the STEM classroom

•         Prize wheel giveaways

“The importance of environmental sustainability is a core principle of Earth Month as well as the New York Energy Zone,” said NYPA Community Relations Manager Joe Caruso. “We look forward to welcoming the community with family-friendly activities to both educate and entertain our guests.”

The New York Energy Zone is a fully-immersive and hands-on science center designed for visitors of all ages, guiding guests on a powerful journey through the past, present, and future of electricity. Visits to the 15,000 square-foot facility kick off with an eye-popping 3-D movie, directed by legendary filmmaker Douglas Trumbull, about famed inventor Nikola Tesla and his contributions to modern electricity systems. This sets the stage for more than 40 interactive displays and games that range from flying a drone to checking transmission lines to operating a power plant and building a table-top microgrid.
