Community Energy Projects
The Tuscarora Nation School located in Western New York, has 70 and 80 students between pre-kindergarten and sixth grade, the majority living on the Tuscarora Reservation. For decades the school has operated without filtered water or updated heating units. Drinking water has been provided through bottled water jugs. When the school needed a new water filtration system, they partnered with NYPA’s Environmental Justice team to get the job done. In 2024, NYPA replaced the water filtration system at the school with 11 new electric heating units that that filter well water and remove lead, calcium bacteria and pesticides. As part of the project, Environmental Justice educators are also providing STEM education focusing on electricity basics, the advantages of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and environmental advocacy.

In 2021, NYPA completed a comprehensive, internal and external common area lighting upgrade for the Niagara Falls Housing Authority. Brighter, energy efficient LED lights make the Authorities over 1,000 residents feel safer inside and outside their apartments.
