WHITE PLAINS—In celebration of Earth Week, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) today announced that it is accepting orders for tree plantings through its Tree Power program. The program, which increases native biodiversity and natural carbon storage, offers a one-to-one match for tree plantings at customer locations throughout the state. This year, NYPA will provide a two-to-one match for tree plantings at customer locations in disadvantaged communities.

As part of the Power Authority’s ongoing environmental stewardship practices, it is strategically selecting and planting native trees at Power Authority customer locations throughout the state. In 2023, the Power Authority planted trees in 30 communities through the program, supporting the planting of more than 1,200 trees across New York. Since 2016, nearly 6,500 trees have been planted under the program, sequestering more than 300 metric tons of carbon emissions. The Tree Power program also supports Governor Hochul’s goal of planting 25 million trees by 2033, as outlined in her 2024 State of the State address.

New York Power Authority President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll said, “In celebration of Earth Week, NYPA will begin accepting tree orders for 2024 under the Tree Power program. Tree Power helps NYPA customers do more than just enhance the curb appeal of their facilities, it provides them with a natural solution that helps them meet their sustainability goal. NYPA recognizes the intrinsic value of green spaces, and that is why this year we are providing a two-to-one tree match for plantings in disadvantaged communities.”

For every tree that a customer purchases to plant, NYPA will offer tree matches up to $5,000 in value. To support the biodiversity of New York State, the Power Authority’s Sustainability department has selected native tree varieties that benefit the region’s insects, birds and mammals, while also storing carbon. Customers can work with the selected vendor to identify the species that are best suited for their planting zones. NYPA is accepting orders for the 2024 program through mid-September.

NYPA’s Tree Power program, first established in 1991, helps customers plant trees to provide wind breaks and shading that reduce building energy use. Last year, on Arbor Day, NYPA announced the program expanded to offer 23 native varieties to an expanded customer base at more eligible locations. Eligible NYPA customers include municipal electric utilities, rural electric cooperatives, and state and local government customers, including the State University of New York and the City University of New York.
