FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NORTH BLENHEIM—Earth Day crafts and films will be featured at the New York Power Authority's (NYPA) Earth Day celebration during the weekend of April 28 and 29 at the Visitors Center for the Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project. Each day of the two-day event will include a craft activity and several showings of family-friendly films with Earth Day messages. Admission is always free and all materials will be provided free of charge.

The weekend schedule is as follows:

Sat., April 28
Craft Activity: Make Your Own Earth Day Button – 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Featured Film: Wall-E (2008) – A small robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will decide the fate of mankind. Show times:  11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Sun., April 29
Craft Activity: Make Your Own Flower Garden – 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Featured Film: Planet Earth  (2007) – A look at what the future holds for endangered animals, their habitats and mankind. Show times:  11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Guests are also encouraged to explore NYPA’s new exhibits highlighting a focus on renewable energy.  The exhibits include a 25-kilowatt (kW) solar electric array and a 2.4-kW wind turbine. Both systems are functional and help to power the visitors center. A monitoring system, located inside the visitors center, allows visitors to see how real-time weather conditions affect the amount of electricity generated by the solar system and the wind turbine.

Also at the visitors center, learn how NYPA's Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project, visible across Schoharie Creek, acts like a giant battery, generating hydroelectricity by recycling water between two huge reservoirs. Other displays demonstrate the basics of electricity, energy production and conservation.
