Project Profile: SUNY-NYPA Ties Show Impact of Energy Efficiencies
One of the more striking examples of the effectiveness of energy-efficiency projects can be seen in the thriving and growing relationship the Power Authority has with the sprawling State University of New York.
With 64 campuses and close to 400,000 students, SUNY is the largest comprehensive system of public higher education in the United States. NYPA energy efficiency specialists work with selected SUNY campus facilities managers in examining and diagnosing the energy health of widely varying physical structures of the system’s two- and four-year institutions.
Such efforts are helping 19 SUNY college locations save nearly 20,000 kilowatts, and $10 million, annually. Some examples:
Buffalo State College— Energy management system for six linked campus buildings; outdoor lighting upgrade Cost / Annual Savings: $1.1 million / $209,000
SUNY Geneseo— 29-building lighting upgrades; occupancy sensors Cost / Annual Savings: $1.4 million / $260,000
SUNY Stony Brook— New motors for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems; exterior lighting; digital energy management control system Cost / Annual Savings: $18 million / $4 million, plus yearly elimination of 13,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions
SUNY Purchase— Lighting upgrades, energy management systems, variable speed motors, boiler upgrades Cost / Annual Savings: $6.5 million / $1.2 million
