Highlights of our activities in the region:
Manhattan - On Wednesday, October 24th, New York Power Authority representatives joined executives from the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), the U.S. Department of Energy and the New York State Public Service Commission to highlight the benefits of a $75 million statewide smart grid initiative.
The initiative, launched in 2009, will improve the efficiency of New York’s bulk power grid, which is made up of hundreds of generating units and thousands of miles of transmission lines. Completion of smart grid projects will allow the NYISO to better fulfill its mission of maintaining the reliability of the state’s power system while operating economically efficient wholesale markets.
Metro Area – NYPA was on hand throughout Southeastern New York at free National Night Out events in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and the Bronx.
America’s National Night Out is held each year in more than 11,000 communities nationwide and is a unique crime and drug prevention event. This neighborhood celebration is a great way help generate support for local anticrime efforts and the police-community partnerships that keep our neighborhoods and nation safe - all while forging a strong sense of community and establishing key partnerships in an effort to help combat violence.
Held on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out events feature activities sponsored by local law enforcement, community groups and area businesses.
Manhattan – We’re helping to make bold visions a reality right here in New York City and throughout the state. The Upper West Side was the scene of a high-powered summit convened by the state’s Energy Highway Task Force at Columbia University on April 4. With prosperity in mind for the state and its residents, experts came together to discuss Governor Cuomo’s Energy Highway initiative and to explore ways to meet New York State’s future electric power needs while protecting the environment and creating jobs. A new website has been launched to provide information about the Energy Highway and the activities of the Task Force.
Yonkers – We've partnered with Habitat for Humanity on a new, near-zero energy house for a local family in Yonkers. Our employees have volunteered their time and labor to clear the land, and will continue to help in coming months. We also donated $25,000 to the effort.
Bronx – We've undertaken a $25 million energy efficiency program to reduce electricity usage, decrease carbon emissions and save money at the New York City Housing Authority’s Castle Hill Houses in the Bronx.
NYPA conducted the energy audit at Castle Hill, identified opportunities for improvements, and is overseeing the implementation of the work. More...
