FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LEWISTON—It doesn’t get any greener than the New York Power Authority’s Festival of Trees, featuring green trees and green lights.  Starting December 6, the Niagara Power Vista will be transformed into a winter wonderland with a dazzling display of reusable trees, adorned with energy efficient holiday lights and decorated by local non-profit groups affiliated with the United Way.

A total of 15 trees will line the glass-enclosed pedestrian overpass that crosses Lewiston Road (Route 104) leading to the Power Authority’s Power Vista. In addition to holiday lights powered by light-emitting diodes (LED), each tree will have ornaments representing the work of one of the participating non-profits, including, the American Red Cross, Niagara Cerebral Palsy, Everywoman Opportunity Center, Inc, the YMCA of Niagara and more. Agency volunteers will be tree-trimming December 1-5. Afterwards, the trees will be in full holiday regalia through the end of the month.

In addition to featuring the work of these community groups, the display also highlights new energy efficient LED lighting.  LED light bulbs last longer than typical incandescent lights and use only 2-10 watts of electricity.  In fact, LED holiday lights used on a 6-foot tree for 12 hours per day over 40 days results in energy savings of 90 percent or more compared to traditional incandescent holiday lights.

In addition to the Festival of Trees, guests are invited to enjoy the Power Vista’s attractions, which include displays and interactive exhibits relating to the production of electricity, energy efficiency and the area’s history, as well as spectacular views from the observation deck, 350 feet above the Niagara River Gorge.  Parking and admission at the Power Vista, located at 5777 Lewiston Road in Lewiston, are always free of charge.

The Niagara Power Vista is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5. p.m.  During the holiday season, it will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.  For more information call 716-286-6661 or 866-NYPA-FUN, or visit www.nypa.gov/vc/niagara.htm for a calendar of events.
