NYPA Visitors Center Announces New Hours Contact:
August 26, 2009 The visitors center, part of NYPA’s St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Columbus Day, October 12. After Columbus Day, the visitors center will shift to its off-season schedule, operating Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Memorial Day. The admission- free visitors center offers many exciting hands-on exhibits on energy, electricity, history and the environment. Visitors can hop on a bicycle generator and turn pedal power into electricity or have a hair-raising experience with static electricity using the Van de Graaff generator. An audiovisual terrain map charts the course of the mighty St. Lawrence River from Ogdensburg to Massena. Since the beginning of the year, NYPA has welcomed more than 13,000 visitors to the Hawkins Point center. With several community events planned for the upcoming months, that number is expected to grow by year’s end. Mark your calendars for more free family fun at the following visitor center events: September 12 - Dam 4 Miler Road Race The Wildlife Festival will feature shows by the World of Wildlife and Educational Encounters, a petting zoo, crafts, entertainment and other attractions and gives visitors a chance to get up-close and personal with a variety of exotic animals.
