There have been quick results to the New York Power
Authority’s recent efforts to create additional nesting habitat for
Common Tern at two locations within Buffalo Harbor. In less than a
month, the Common Tern, a threatened species in New York, have built
nearly 300 nests on newly provided nesting sites. The nesting
surface at each site was created by adding pea gravel, installing
fencing and constructing small shelters to protect the flightless
chicks throughout the summer. The work results from the success the
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation had with
similar nesting habitats in the area. Read
related press release on habitat construction.
