FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LEWISTON—The popular fishing pier at the base of
the New York Power Authority's (NYPA) Robert Moses Niagara Power
Plant—the main generating facility at the Niagara Power Project—will
remain open during a construction project to improve access to the
pier.
As part of its relicensing settlement, NYPA agreed
to expand the parking area at the base of the power plant.
Currently, only handicapped parking is available at the plant’s
base by the river’s edge. All other parking is at the top of the
gorge with access to the fishing pier by staircase.
Beginning Monday, May 18, contractors will start
expanding the parking and turnaround area at the lower level. Work
is expected to continue into the first week in July. When
completed, the lower-level area will include four
handicapped-accessible parking spaces and parking for up to 10
additional vehicles.
Access to the fishing pier will remain available
during the work, but the lower-level, handicapped-accessible parking
lot will be closed. The parking lot at the top of the gorge will
remain open. The Power Authority regrets the temporary
inconvenience to achieve the long-term benefit of expanding the
lower parking area.
The pier, open daily from dawn to dusk, is
admission-free.
