NYPA's Friday Matinees In Massena Feature Contemporary and Classic Hits Contact: April 27, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE During May, NYPA will show a selection of movies on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. in the visitors center auditorium. Free popcorn will be available for the movie showings. The May schedule is: May 1: “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” (1954). Set on a ranch in the Oregon Territory, this rousing musical tells the story of Adam and his six unruly brothers. Adam marries Milly, who is appalled by the motley crew and takes it upon herself to tame them. May 8: “Meet Me in St. Louis” (1944). Director Vincente Minnelli's masterpiece of Americana about the trials and tribulations of the St. Louis-dwelling Smith clan is one of the greatest American film musicals. Judy Garland stars as Esther Smith, who just can't ignore the "boy next door.” May 15: “Marley and Me” (2008). Based on the best-selling memoir, this feature adaptation centers on Jennifer and John Grogan, who, as newlyweds about to start a family, learn many of life's important lessons from Marley, their lovable yet trouble-seeking canine. May 22: “The Producers” (1968). In this hysterical farce, rapacious but lovable producer Max Bialystock hasn't had a hit in years. Quite by accident, he and his meek, neurotic accountant, Leo Bloom, come up with a plot to oversell shares in a surefire flop musical and make off with the profits -- using the worst play ever written, "Springtime for Hitler." May 29: “Australia” (2008). In the days leading up to World War II, Lady Sarah Ashley inherits a sprawling cattle ranch in northern Australia. Threatened by land barons, she reluctantly joins her farmhand as he drives 2,000 head of cattle across the outback. At this time of year, the visitors center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Besides enjoying free movies, visitors can sample the array of hands-on exhibits at the Hawkins Point facility, which presents information on such subjects as water power and NYPA’s St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project.
