NYPA's Friday Matinees Feature Academy-Award Nominated Movies Contact:
MASSENA—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will continue its free “Friday Matinees” in March with showings of Academy Award-nominated movies at the admission-free Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center and Boat Launch at the St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project. In March, NYPA will show a selection of movies on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. in the visitors center auditorium. Free popcorn will be available for the movie showings. The March schedule is: March 6: “Forrest Gump” (1994). You'll never view the world the same way after seeing it through the eyes of Forrest Gump, a simpleminded man who finds himself in the middle of nearly every major event of the 1960s and '70s. Along the way, he makes friends, changes lives and searches for a soul mate. March 13: “Walk the Line” (2005). Among the pantheon of great country singers, Johnny Cash may just be the most enigmatic. James Mangold's film distills Cash's transformation from man to icon - from his hardscrabble days on an Arkansas farm to Sun Records in Memphis, Tenn., where Cash finally found a way for his talent to come into its own. March 20: “Seabiscuit” (2003). During the Depression, people around the country became fascinated with the story of Seabiscuit, who won Horse of the Year honors in 1938. March 27: “Cinderella Man” (2005). Russell Crowe stars as pugilist Jim Braddock, who garnered boxing glory when he defeated champion Max Baer in a winner-takes-all bout during the Great Depression. At this time of year, the visitors center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Besides enjoying free movies, visitors can sample the array of hands-on exhibits at the Hawkins Point facility, which presents information on such subjects as water power and NYPA’s St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project.
