Fish Habitat Improvements in Niagara River
October 30, 2008
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) and Buffalo
marine contractor H. J. Darling have completed installation of a
pilot program of fish attraction structures by placing boulder-sized
rocks and tree limbs on the bottom of the Upper Niagara River to
simulate reefs and produce currents where fish like to rest, forage
and hide. Four prototype structures were installed in the river and
will be evaluated to determine effective design features for future
locations. This $118,000 Habitat Improvement Project is one of many
benefits for Western New York funded by NYPA through the 2007
license awarded to NYPA for operation of the Niagara Power Project.
