Protection System Installed at NYPA Plant

Sound projectors are lowered from a barge for
installation in the Mohawk River as part of the New York Power
Authority’s redesigned fish protection system at the Crescent
hydroelectric plant. The system, which uses sound from the
projectors to repel blueback herring, is intended to keep the fish
away from the plant’s powerhouse on their annual downstream
migration to the Atlantic Ocean.

hydroelectric plant on the Mohawk River, where the Power Authority
has installed a redesigned system to protect blueback herring on
their annual downstream migration to the Atlantic Ocean. Underwater
sound projectors, located just north of the large island in the
middle of the photo, are intended to keep the herring away from the
powerhouse on the left and guide them over the dam on the right.
