FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"The New York Power Authority Board of Trustees
today approved a conditional award of a purchase-power agreement to
NRG Energy in anticipation of a strategic alliance in support of the
construction of a more than $1 billion clean coal power plant, which
NRG proposes to build at its Huntley Generating Station in the Town
of Tonawanda in Erie County.
Today's action by our board follows up on Governor
Pataki's comprehensive plan and initiative to reduce New York’s
dependence on imported oil with state-of-the-art clean coal
technology cited as a key element. The plan for the Huntley upgrade
directly stems from that initiative.
Participants in a collaborative multi-agency effort
led by the Governor’s Office of Regulatory Reform worked to identify
the parameters for the clean-coal facility and the issuance of
the Request For Proposals (RFP). In addition to the Power Authority,
the parties contributing to the process included the NYSERDA, Empire
State Development Corp., the Department of Environmental
Conservation and the Department of Public Service. Our team
thoroughly reviewed the proposals submitted and determined that an
alliance with NRG Energy would be best in seeing the Governor's
clean coal initiative become a reality."
