Power Authority Marks the Start of Eel Passage Facility’s Operation

Readying Eel Passage Facility—Migrating eels have a new conduit for swimming upstream to the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario thanks to a recently installed passage facility at the N.Y. Power Authority’s St. Lawrence-F.D.R. Power Project in Massena. On Aug. 9, state and federal officials joined NYPA in inaugurating the $2 million passageway, which includes a 182-foot ladder the eels climb from the base of the power dam.
