FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ASTORIA —The
New York Power Authority (NYPA) will be a sponsor of the National
Night Out Against Crime in the 114th Precinct from 5 to 8 p.m. on
Tuesday, Aug. 1 on the Astoria Park Great Lawn, Shore Boulevard
between the bridges. The event is co-sponsored by the 114th Precinct
Community Council and the 114th Precinct Civ-OP, Inc. (Civilian
Observation Patrol).
"The Power Authority appreciates the work that the
114th Precinct’s Community Council and Civilian Observation Patrol
do in helping the New York Police Department keep our neighborhoods
as crime-free as possible," said Joseph Leary, NYPA’s director of
public and governmental affairs for Southeast New York. "The
cooperation between the Community Council, Civ-OP and the Police
Department is a primary reason for Astoria’s reputation as a safe,
multi-cultural and multi-faceted community. We are very happy to
again support them and National Night Out, which is a wonderful
community event that showcases their efforts and the services they
and other organizations provide."
NYPA, the nation’s largest state-owned electric
utility, will display a hybrid-electric vehicle at the event and
will distribute brochures and other materials concerning its
mission, services and accomplishments, including its nationally
recognized efforts to promote energy efficiency.
The Power Authority to date has invested more than
$85 million in completed projects to curb energy use at 209 schools,
public hospitals, police stations and other public facilities in
Queens. The energy efficiency measures have included installation of
new lighting; heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment;
and motors as well as computer-based energy management systems. This
work results in annual savings of more than $9 million to taxpayers
and cuts oil use by more than 145,000 barrels and greenhouse-gas
emissions by over 66,000 tons annually.
About NYPA:
■ NYPA uses no tax money or
state credit. It finances its operations through the sale of
bonds and revenues earned in large part through sales of
electricity. ■ NYPA is a leader in promoting
energy-efficiency, new energy technologies and electric
transportation initiatives. ■ It is the
nation’s largest state-owned electric utility, with 18 generating
facilities in various parts of the state and more than 1,400
circuit-miles of transmission lines.
