FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Malone School District will receive a $500,000 grant to help fund
a comprehensive $1.1 million renewable power and energy-efficiency
project according to an announcement Tuesday by the New York Power
Authority (NYPA), which will work with Malone schools to complete the
project.
“The wise use of energy is a lesson everyone should learn. So, it’s
fitting that Malone students will experience first-hand the benefits
of renewable power and energy efficiency,” said Louis P. Ciminelli,
chairman of the Power Authority. “The energy system upgrades planned
for Malone Schools will enhance the classroom environment with better
lighting and improved climate controls. By saving energy and cutting
its energy bills, the school district will also reduce costs. By using
solar energy, the Malone Schools will help demonstrate ‘green power’
technologies that use renewable sources of energy to benefit the
environment.”
The $500,000 grant is from the New York State’s share of petroleum
overcharge restitution (POCR) funds recovered in federal court cases
to compensate consumers who were unfairly overcharged by major oil
companies in the 1980’s. In New York State, these funds have been
earmarked to defray the costs of energy-efficiency programs.
Chairman Ciminelli said, “Under Governor Pataki’s leadership, the
Power Authority has more than doubled its annual investments in energy
efficiency projects for schools and other public buildings. We are
especially pleased to assist our North Country neighbor, the Malone
School District, to put advanced clean energy technologies to work in
local schools.”
