FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WHITE PLAINS—The
New York Power Authority (NYPA) has selected Janis Archer, director of
product design and delivery in NYPA’s information technology unit, as its
Woman Achiever of the Year for 2002.
Archer was one of the approximately 80 women honored by their employers
at the annual Salute to Women Achievers Luncheon sponsored by the Academy of
Women Achievers of the YWCA of the City of New York at the New York Marriott
Marquis in Manhattan on Thursday (Nov. 21). The award recognizes women who
have demonstrated leadership and served as positive examples in the
workplace.
“Archer has served the Power Authority through her efficient and
phenomenal work as director of product design and delivery,” said Eugene W.
Zeltmann, the Power Authority’s president and chief executive officer. “She
is a person with the exceptional zeal recognized by this award.”
A resident of North White Plains, Archer is based in
the Power Authority’s White Plains office. She was selected for the award
from among Power Authority staff at projects and offices throughout New York
State."
Since joining the Power Authority staff in 1989, Archer
has contributed to many successful software application solutions for the
Power Authority, including management of a year-long project to revise
NYPA’s billing system for Y2K compliance. She also helped implement a
program for NYPA energy traders to submit bids to supply electricity to the
New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), the not-for-profit corporation
that administers the state’s wholesale electricity market and also operates
its transmission system.
Archer is currently supervising the development of a
system that will allow NYPA staff to more accurately predict customers’
electric loads to ensure that NYPA’s energy traders bid for the most
economic power available, in the NYISO market, to meet those customers’
needs.
Archer is known by her NYPA peers as a great leader and
mentor, who is attentive to the needs and deadlines of her colleagues. She
takes great pride in her work and appreciates the help she receives from her
co-workers.
In nominating her for the award, Archer’s supervisor
noted her dedication to excellence in her work and her impressive community
service activities. Archer teaches college-level information technology
classes and serves on the board of the Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel
in White Plains. She has stage managed for a local theater group and served
on the board of the Valhalla Ambulance Corps for six years including three
as chairperson. Archer also enjoys taking courses in her free time on
topics as diverse as macroeconomics, astronomy, finance and photography.
Archer holds a bachelor’s in mathematics from Binghamton
University and a master’s in computer science from New York University.
