The approval of NYPA’s application for this clean, new state-of-the-art power plant is a major step in continuing efforts to improve New York City’s air quality while striving to assure reliable electricity capacity in the years ahead. The new plant will be among the cleanest sources of power in the city and will lead to the closing of our Poletti Power Project, a 25-year-old power plant at the same site in Astoria, Queens.
Last month, Governor Pataki announced the historic agreement among environmental groups, local officials and the Power Authority to support the clean, new facility, shut down the older plant and increase the Power Authority’s investments in energy efficiency and clean energy projects in Queens and throughout New York City.
As a result of these significant collaborative efforts, we will enhance environmental quality as we work to provide reliable supplies of electricity for New York.
