FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WHITE PLAINS New York Power Authority trustees Tuesday approved $500,000 in funding for the engineering of a footbridge between the Bronx and Randall's Island.
The footbridge would provide an enhanced non-vehicular access to Randall's Island for community-based recreational and commuter purposes that would meet the needs of the residents of the Bronx. In addition, the footbridge would help facilitate the future development plan at Randall's Island for recreational and open spaces for the residents of the Bronx.
During discussions about the placement of four combustion-turbine generators in the borough, Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer indicated the Bronx is interested in the bridge as part of its development program. The borough has already completed several studies of the proposal and has turned those studies over to the Power Authority.
Borough President Ferrer said, "This is wonderful news. It presents recreational and open space opportunities for the residents of Mott Haven in The Bronx."
State Senator Guy Velella, noting Gov. George E. Pataki's leadership, said, "I applaud Governor Pataki's investment in the footbridge between The Bronx and Randall's Island. This means that our families will have greater access to our natural beauties and recreational opportunities."
