| Sherrill's City Hall is
the heartbeat of the city, housing the police and fire departments and the city offices. |
 |
Welcome to the City of Sherrill Power & Light web page! Located
in Oneida County, Sherrill is officially recognized as the smallest city
in New York State, with approximately 3,200 residents.
The history of Sherrill dates back to the mid-19th
century, with the establishment of the Oneida Community, a religious
commune created by a group practicing "Perfectionism." In1877, members
of the community started a silverware business, which later expanded to
include stainless-steel flatware.
 |
Sherrill's Skinner Block, built in 1925, is believed to
be New York State's first strip mall. |
In 1888, when the Oneida Community decided to establish itself as a municipality,
it petitioned the federal government for a post office. With the help of Congressman James
S. Sherman (who later served as Vice President of the United States), the petition was
granted. As a sign of appreciation, our community was named in honor of Congressman
Shermans infant son, Sherrill. In 1916, state legislation established Sherrill as a
city, with five non-partisan commissioners who choose a mayor from among their ranks and
appoint a city manager to serve as chief executive officer.
Our municipal electric company was owned by Oneida Ltd. until it was sold to city
in 1977. We presently serve about 1,800 customers, mostly residential. Located just south
of the New York State Thruway (I-90), Sherrill is a just a short commute from Syracuse,
Utica and Rome. Route 5, our main commercial corridor, has several small parcels available
for development. With the New York Power Authority supplying us with some of the cheapest
electricity in the state, Sherrill just might be the perfect place for you to locate your
business.
