Fairport

Erie Canal photo The Erie Canal passes through Fairport's downtown business district, offering boating and other recreational opportunities.

If you're looking for a great location with low electric rates for your company, look no further than the area served by Fairport Electric, the municipal electric system for the Village of Fairport! Established in 1901, our system is one of the largest in New York State. Our community’s history stretches back even further in time. Agricultural pioneers first settled in our region near the end of the 18th century.

The early 19th century brought the Erie Canal, and by 1827 our community— deemed a "fair port" for passing travelers—had its first tavern. A post office was opened about two years later, and soon our village became an active focal point for commercial, industrial and social activity. When our municipal electric system began operation at the turn of the century, we had a small steam generator serving 12 street lights and 40 homes in the center of Fairport. Today, our system serves 15,000 customers in our village and much of the nearby Town of Perinton, an area covering about 27 square miles.

Located about 10 miles east of Rochester, Faiport is a suburban community that has both residential neighborhoods as well as a healthy commercial/industrial base. We have purchased our electricity from the New York Power Authority since April 28, 1961, and offer our customers some of the lowest-cost electricity in the state. Among the businesses were serve are Webster Plastics, a maker of automotive products; LiDestri Foods, a major maker of spaghetti sauce and food products, including actor Paul Newman’s "Newman's Own Spaghetti Sauce"; and Casa Larga Vineyards, the only winery in Monroe County.

Fairport’s half-mile of dock space draws many pleasure craft to our popular downtown business district, making us one of the busiest ports along the Erie Canal. Since the 1970s, our village has pursued a redevelopment plan along the waterfront that combines historically sensitive new construction with rehabilitation projects to preserve the best from Fairport’s past. Besides our healthy economy, Fairport offers numerous parks and recreational facilities, specialty shops and restaurants, an excellent school system, a library and museum. Today, the primary opportunity for business development in Fairport involves tourism and retail sales.

Outside the village boundary, commercial or industrial opportunities are available in the Town of Perinton, which benefits from Fairport’s municipal electric system. Inquiries can be made either with the Town of Perinton (585-223-0770) or Monroe County’s economic development office (585-753-2000). We invite you to consider starting or expanding a business venture within our municipal system.

What Fairport Electric has to offer your company:
Location Fairport is located 10 miles east of Rochester, about five miles north of the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90). Nearby, the Greater Rochester International Airport is served by major airlines. And while the Erie Canal handles mostly pleasure craft these days, Conrail and Amtrak provide high-speed rail service.
Real Estate Commercial properties are available in the Village of Fairport’s downtown business district. Larger sites for industrial development may be found in the Town of Perinton, which is also served by our electric system.
Municipal Improvements In 1995, the Village of Faiport completed a yearlong process of rewriting its Comprehensive Plan, which included an Action Plan to guide future development. Redevelopment of our historic waterfront district has been successful in attracting new businesses to the village.
