Energy Savings for all State Buildings
It’s an ambitious goal—a 20% improvement in energy efficiency at state owned and managed buildings by the year 2020. But the return on the BuildSmart NY program makes it worthwhile: energy efficiency is one of the most cost-effective methods for reducing greenhouse gas and other environmental pollutant emissions, and implementing energy efficiency improvements creates jobs and leads to reductions in building operating expenses. Those positive outcomes led Governor Andrew Cuomo to issue an executive order (88) mandating the improvements. NYPA is charged with advising on BuildSmart NY projects and tracking the program’s progress. BuildSmart NY is a key program underpinning the Governor’s Reforming the Energy Vision strategy to build a cleaner, more affordable and resilient energy system that supports the state’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030.
Six state entities are responsible for more than 90 percent of the State’s building space, and they have been central to the BuildSmart NY effort.
