In December 2005, NYPA put into commercial operation one of the cleanest, most-efficient power plants in New York City’s history in Astoria, Queens, next to its Charles Poletti Power Project.

This highly efficient combined-cycle power-generating facility provides New York City with adequate, reliable power supplies in the new era of electricity-industry deregulation. The power plant runs on clean natural gas, with low sulfur oil as a backup fuel.

The site
The location for this plant is a seven-acre parcel that is part of a 47-acre site the Power Authority owns in Astoria, Queens. The facility is adjacent to the Poletti project, an 885-megawatt generating facility that also runs on natural gas, with low sulfur oil as a backup fuel.

The Power Authority property is part of a larger site on which other power plants are located. Since 1905 this property, in the northwest corner of Queens, overlooking the East River, has been used for electricity generation, fuel storage and related industrial purposes. By building this combined-cycle plant next to its Poletti project, the Power Authority was able to use the existing infrastructure network, which includes a natural gas supply, electric transmission and fuel storage facilities.
