While widespread use of hydrogen as a fuel for vehicles is still a decade or more away, the basic technology already exists-electricity from onboard fuel cells that run on hydrogen. The technology is being developed and tested at numerous sites in Europe, Japan and the United States, including New York's state capital.
Two Honda FCX fuel cell cars and a portable hydrogen refueling station are being leased by the state Office of General Services, with support from the Power Authority and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. While earlier demonstrations were performed in warm weather climates, Albany provides a testing ground with sub-zero winter temperatures, which the Honda FCX is successfully handling.
With water vapor the only byproduct of hydrogen-powered cars, zero-emission vehicles have become a goal within reach. But many technological hurdles remain.
