By reducing our dependence on foreign oil with increased reliance on hydropower, fuel cells, solar power and wind energy, we spark innovation in advanced technology and protect our precious natural resources. Lowering energy costs helps us to move our economy forward and produce new job opportunities.
The New York Power Authority contributes significantly to these efforts by:
- Annually installing scores of energy-efficiency projects in schools and government buildings across the state, saving tax dollars by cutting energy costs and improving air quality by avoiding harmful emissions.
- Generating more than 80 percent of its electricity with renewable resources, including enough hydropower to bring New York more than halfway to the 25 percent goal of our pioneering Renewable Portfolio Standard. NYPA's leadership in developing fuel cells, solar power and other new technologies helps assure that more and more of the state's energy will come from homegrown renewable sources.
- Deploying impressive numbers of emission-free electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, in the largest such program in the Northeast.
- Providing funding to move New York State to the front ranks of hydrogen technology research, to drive economic advancement, foster energy security and enhance environmental quality.
Building on a dramatic decade of progress, the New York Power Authority is playing an essential role in our efforts to achieve an even brighter and better future for every citizen of the Empire State.
