As chairman of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, he has been at the forefront of efforts, led by Gov. George E. Pataki, to make the most of the states available generating capacity through the use of the latest energy-saving technologies to lower power demand. Energy efficiency is an essential element of New Yorks overall energy policy, Wright said. Besides lowering electric bills, it reduces the use of old, inefficient power plants and improves air quality by cutting greenhouse-gas emissions from existing generating facilities. It also strengthens national energy security by reducing dependence on foreign oil. |
