| FROM THE GOVERNOR | |||

On the heels of the attack, I directed that low-cost NYPA electricity formerly dedicated to the World Trade Center be provided to companies displaced by the destruction, saving them about $6 million a year. In August, I signed into law legislation to continue the highly successful Power for Jobs program, linked to about 300,000 jobs at businesses and not-for-profit organizations, which save up to 25 percent on their electric bills. In November NYPA began construction of a clean, efficient power plant in Queens, at a time of pressing need and when New York Citys ability to import power was severely limited by transmission constraints. In the North Country, the Power Authority will provide $2.5 million in funding to help expand a high-speed fiber-optic network, which will give local businesses the tools they need to join new markets in the United States and Canada. These are examples of public- and private-sector cooperation at its finest. They are just some of the ways in which NYPA is making an invaluable contribution toward meeting the Empire States energy and economic needs while helping to protect the states environment for future generations.
