Energy Efficiency
For more than a decade, the Power Authority has performed
energy-efficiency upgrades at a growing list of public facilities
across the state, and the effort continues to gather steam. NYPA’s
total investments in the projects have surpassed $1 billion (the investments are recovered through energy savings).
Taxpayers now save more than $93 million each year in energy costs.
The upgrades can be as large as efficient heating and air
conditioning systems, or as small as sensors that automatically turn
off lights when a room is unoccupied. (more)
New Energy Technologies
New technologies offer additional opportunities to preserve the
environment through clean, renewable energy. The Power Authority’s
demonstration projects for solar energy, fuel cells, microturbines,
advanced battery storage, biomass and other technologies promote
efficiency and the use of alternative or renewable fuels. (more)
Clean Transportation
The Power Authority has demonstrated the feasibility of electric
and hybrid-electric vehicles as a way to reduce air pollution and
dependence on foreign oil. We are working with a refined concept, a
“plug-in” hybrid-electric that can draw power from the grid as well
as an internal combustion engine. Along with automobiles, our
demonstration projects include buses and off-road utility vehicles.
