FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LEWISTON— When Niagara Mohawk’s Schoellkopf hydropower plant was destroyed by a rock slide, low-cost power to the region was suddenly in short supply.  On March 18, 1958, under the leadership of New York’s “master builder,” Robert Moses, construction of the Niagara Power Project began. A team of nearly 12,000 men and women feverishly worked round the clock seven days a week and first power was achieved on January 28, 1961.

Many of those men and women have since passed on, but in celebration of the 50th anniversary of their achievement, more than 100 of them will gather at the New York Power Authority’s Niagara Power Vista for a “Hard Hats” reunion on Saturday, August 13, 2011.

The event also marks the release of “Hard Hats of Niagara,” a book containing personal recollections of the project’s construction as compiled by Ken Glennon, a chief organizer of the Hard Hats.  Glennon will hold a book signing as part of the day’s activities.  The Hard Hats will also view “Building Niagara: Memories” video featuring some of the faces and voices of the storytellers contained in the book.
