FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LEWISTON—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is
playing host to a job fair today at the Niagara Power Project
Visitors Center as part of a four-day festival for highlighting the
attributes of Niagara Falls and drawing former residents back to the
city and region. The festival, called Niagara Homecoming, was
organized by Niagara Rises, a local group, and coincides with a
similar celebration taking place in Buffalo.
“We’re delighted to be able to contribute to the
Niagara Homecoming Festival by making the Niagara Power Vista
available for Friday’s job fair, as well as a real estate
presentation on Saturday for potential area home buyers,” Richard M.
Kessel, NYPA president and chief executive officer, said. “Both
visitor center events are in support of the fundamental goal of the
festival for making more widely known what Niagara Falls and the
surrounding region have to offer, especially for former Western New
Yorkers who might consider returning to the region.”
Kessel noted that a number of area employers who
may be hiring in the future are participating in the job fair. They
include Blue Cross Blue Shield, Catholic Health System, First
Niagara Bank, Invitrogen-Life Technologies, Seneca Niagara Casino,
Wal-Mart, as well as the New York Power Authority.
In addition to employing about 300 people at the
Niagara Power Project, NYPA plays a major role in supporting jobs in
Western New York through its allocations of low-cost hydropower from
the project. Nearly 39,000 jobs within 30 miles of the project
switchyard are directly tied to those allocations. The Power
Authority also administers statewide economic development power
programs—the Power for Jobs and Energy Cost Savings Benefit
programs--that help to retain approximately 14,000 additional jobs
in Niagara and Erie Counties.
Friday’s job fair at the Power Vista is from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday’s realty presentation will be from 10 a.m.
to 12 noon. The visitors center is at 5777 Lewiston Rd. in
Lewiston. For more information, contact Lou Paonessa, Niagara
community relations manager, at (716) 286-6651.
Among the other scheduled activities of the Niagara
Homecoming Festival will be a tour of Niagara Falls on Saturday and
a brunch on Sunday at the Aquarium of Niagara. For additional
information on those activities, contact Niagara Rises at
NiagaraRises@Yahoo.com.
