NYPA’s Friday Matinees in July Feature Contemporary and Classic Hits Contact:
June 26, 2009 MASSENA—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will continue its free “Friday Matinees” in July with showings of contemporary and classic movies at the admission-free Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center and Boat Launch in Massena. During July, NYPA will show a selection of movies on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. in the visitors center auditorium. Free popcorn will be available for the movie showings. July Movie Schedule: July 3: “The Great Gatsby” (1974). Nominated for two Academy Awards in 1974, this movie brings to life F. Scott Fitzgerald's wrenching novel. Mia Farrow stars as Daisy Buchanan, the object of millionaire Jay Gatsby's (Robert Redford) affections. Beyond Gatsby's grasp, Daisy is married to unfaithful Tom (Bruce Dern), making for a love triangle that ends with broken hearts. July 10: “12 Angry Men” (1957). Twelve men must decide the fate of an 18-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing his father. Only one (Henry Fonda) wants to take the time to coolly deliberate the case. This fiery drama illuminates all the petty impediments on the path to justice. July 17: “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008). David Fincher directs this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic tale set in the early 20th century that follows Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt), a man who was born in his 80s and continually grows younger. The story throws linear conventions upside down to explore love, loss and memories from the perspective of a character living under incredibly unique circumstances. July 24: “Miracle” (2004). Focused on achieving the impossible - defeating the Soviet Union's unbeaten hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics - brash U.S. hockey coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) unites a motley group of college athletes and turns them into a force to be reckoned with. July 31: “City Slickers” (1991). For a change of pace, three friends (Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, Bruno Kirby) sign on for a fortnight cattle drive through the Colorado hills. The urbanites' survival depends on a leathery trail boss (Jack Palance). Besides enjoying free movies, visitors can sample the array of hands-on exhibits at the Hawkins Point facility, which presents information on such subjects as electricity generation and NYPA’s St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project. Visitors are sure to enjoy the panoramic views of the power dam.
