In 1859, the concord grape was introduced to the southwest region of New York State. By 1897, Westfield was known as the "Grape Juice Capital of the World," and to this day, grape production remains the backbone of our community. With its agricultural economy, Westfield has maintained a strong tie to its historical past, particularly in our commitment to preserving historic districts and buildings. Recently, our village held a dedication to commemorate the visit of then-Republican Presidential Nominee Abraham Lincoln and Grace Bedell, the Westfield youngster who suggested that the Illinois senator grow a beard.

The railway industry’s main east-west lines pass through Westfield, providing many opportunities to view a wide variety of trains at our restored railroad station. Westfield has also traditionally served as a gateway to New York State and New England from points west. In fact, at the start of the 19th century, our village was simply known as "Cross Roads."

In 1892, the village electric system began operations. Our initial goal was to generate enough electricity to illuminate 23 streetlight fixtures. Today, we serve a population of 5,000 people in an area of approximately 50 square miles. Since 1961, our village has purchased its electricity from the New York Power Authority, specifically the nearby Niagara Power Project. The results of this partnership have provided the citizens of Westfield with some of the lowest-priced power in the nation.

Our electric system, which became part of the Westfield Department of Public Works in 1996, is operated entirely through revenues generated by the sale of electricity. Our staff members provide all the maintenance, operations and system extensions without the use of outside contractors. With our reduced utility rates and ideal location, Westfield is enjoying a healthy economy. Among our customers are: Welch Foods and Growers Co-op; Mogen-David, a major wine producer; Better Bakes Foods, a bread bakery; Reynolds, a major machining center; and several smaller entrepreneurs that have seen their businesses expand and prosper. We invite you to consider starting or enlarging your business here in Westfield.
