Welcome to the web page for the Municipal Electric Department of Lake Placid
Village, Inc.! Lake Placid is world famous as a site for two Winter Olympics, but did you
know that were also the home of many successful businesses? By purchasing our
electricity from the New York Power Authority, we can offer our customers some of the
lowest cost electricity in the state. Perhaps you should consider locating your company
here.
 |
North Elba Town Hall |
Our electric department serves about 4,000 customers, covering all of Lake Placid
Village and part of the surrounding Town of North Elba. The department was established in
1906. At that time, our electricity needs were met by the nearby Paul Smiths Light and
Power Co., as well as two small hydroelectric generators on the Ausable River (one of
which, almost 100 years old, is still in operation at a museum in Delaware). We began
buying our electricity from the New York Power Authority in 1967.

The Lake Placid Olympic Facilities are a popular attraction. |
Tourism is our number one industry, and with good reason: the recreational
opportunities here are limitless. Weve hosted two Winter Olympics (1932 and 1980),
and, in 1999, Lake Placid was the site of the first Ironman Triathlon held on the mainland
United States. Located in the Adirondack Park, our region is rich in natural beauty. But
Lake Placid is more than just a great place to vacation.
More and more businesses are recognizing our community as an ideal place to set up
shop, whether theyre a sporting goods outfitter or a high-tech industrial center.
Tracts of undeveloped land are available within our electric departments
jurisdiction. We welcome new businesses and are willing to work with prospective employers
in meeting the requirements of the Adirondack Park Agency. Much more information is
available at the Lake Placid/Essex County Convention and Visitors Bureau web page: www.lakeplacid.com
| What Lake
Placid's Municipal Electric Department has to offer your company: |
| Location |
Admittedly,
Lake Placid is off the beaten path, but with todays telecommuting possibilities,
working in a big city may no longer be necessary. Our village is a 2 ½ hour drive from
three major airports: Albany, New York; Burlington, Vermont; and Montreal, Quebec.
Adirondack Airport, in the nearby community of Saranac Lake, receives commercial flights
and is just 16 miles away. Lake Placid Municipal Airport, which can handle charter
flights, is one mile south of the village. Amtrak serves Lake Placid with its Westport
station, located 40 miles to our east. Lake Placid is about a 30-mile drive from exit 30
of the Adirondack Northway (I-87). |
