Welcome to the Village of Mayville Municipal Electric Department web page! Our municipal system, which began operation in 1896, serves the Village of Mayville, located at the northern tip of Chautauqua Lake, and a small portion of the surrounding Town of Chautauqua. With a population of about 1,600, Mayville is the county seat for Chautauqua County, one of Western New York’s most popular tourist destinations.

The Chautauqua Belle is anchored at Lakeside Park.

By owning our own electric distribution system, we are able to offer our customers low rates and personalized service. Our department staff members handle all maintenance and billing responsibilities. The department operates entirely from its own revenues and helps keep tax rates low by contributing payments-in-lieu-of-taxes to the village’s General Fund. Since 1961, Mayville has purchased all of its electricity from the New York Power Authority, at a cost of about 50 percent less than that charged by other privately-owned utilities. In 1993, Mayville’s electric department installed a computerized SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system that allows load management practices for additional cost savings.

While the well-known Chautauqua Institution is a neighbor, our biggest local industries in Mayville are Ethan Allen, the furniture manufacturer, and Belknap Business Forms, a printing firm. Most of our residents are employed locally, although Buffalo is about an hour’s commute to the north.

Mayville has seen several improvements to its municipal infrastructure in recent years. In 1994, our business district was renovated with new sidewalks and antique lighting fixtures. More recently, with the merger of the Mayville and Chautauqua school districts, work has begun on a new central school that will serve students from pre-kindergarten through high school. Our electric department has provided a new 34.5-kilovolt line to serve the school building, which will open in the Fall of 2000.

Because of the school district improvements, housing sales in Mayville have been brisk. Several large tracts of undeveloped acreage are available on the outskirts of the village, although vacant land within the business district is limited. Still, you may want to consider Mayville for your small firm or business.

What the Mayville Municipal Electric Department has to offer your company:

Tourism Opportunities Chautauqua County has approximately 80 miles of shoreline, including Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake, making water sports a significant attraction.
