|FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE|
ALBANY—The New York Power Authority (NYPA), working with the New York State Canal Corporation, beginning on the evening May 21, will install flashboards at the Crescent and Vischer Ferry Dams located on the Mohawk River in the Towns of Niskayuna, Clifton Park and Colonie.
Staff members from NYPA’s Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project will direct the work, which will be conducted by a maintenance crew from the Waterford Maintenance Section of the New York State Canal Corporation, using a self-propelled, flat bottom boat, or scow.
Water levels in Niskayuna, where the Vischer Ferry Dam is located, will begin to drop during the evening of Monday, May 21, to 0.5 feet below crest, in anticipation of the installation of the flashboards and the fish deterrent system on Tuesday, May 22, Wednesday, May 23, and Thursday, May 24. The water level at Vischer Ferry Dam will rise to 211 feet during the evening of Thursday, May 24.
On Friday, May 25, the pool at the Crescent Dam in Halfmoon on the Champlain Canal will be drawn down to 0.5 feet below crest, to complete installation of the flashboards. In the evening hours of Friday, May 25, the water levels at the Crescent Dam will be restored as river flows permit.
Unforeseen precipitation and high water conditions may delay this schedule. The Canal Season opened for the 188th consecutive navigation season on April 28. The adjusted water levels may affect some boats in shallow waters. They should have no impact on boating within the navigation channel.
Flashboards are plastic and/or wooden planks that facilitate higher water levels in order to meet the Canal Corporation’s summer navigation levels. Fish deterrent systems help direct fish over dams. Any questions regarding this work should be directed to John Osinski, New York Power Authority Albany Office at 518-433-6742.
