Senior Research & Technology Development Engineer

Description:
In this position, you will develop new highly technical and innovative ideas, technologies and tools that have the potential to reduce NYPA’s operation and maintenance costs while increasing NYPA power systems’ efficiency, reliability and safety.

Responsibilities include developing, implementing, testing and evaluating the efficacy of the new tools and techniques and delivering working products to various operating divisions; analyzing steady state, dynamic and transient power system phenomena utilizing specialized power system analysis tools and techniques; and managing research projects for quality, schedule and cost control.

Additional duties include performing hands on trouble shooting and field testing; Integrating Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data in existing Energy Management Systems (EMS) applications and developing new applications; creating, testing and validating complex mathematical models of the power system components for simulation studies needed for operations and control of the power system; preparing technical scopes of work, request for proposals and contracts; developing and implementing innovative technological solutions for our customers; supervising work of contractors and consultants; coordinating major projects across multiple engineering disciplines; preparing reports and technical papers for dissemination and/or publication; and representing NYPA as a senior technical expert on industry committees and groups.

Requirements:
Candidates must possess a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering with Power Systems concentration, along with 7+ years of experience. A PhD is preferred. Knowledge of power plant and substation electrical equipment, transmission systems, AC/DC conversion and Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS), control systems and automation technologies is required. Familiarity with Electro Magnetic Transients Program (EMTP) and MATLAB as well as GPS-Based PMU hardware and applications software is necessary. Excellent collaboration, planning, decision-making, leadership, project management, written and verbal communication skills are essential. Proficiency in power system analysis tools, C, C++ programming, computer networking and data communications is a plus. The ability to travel is a must.
