Electrical Engineer
Power Generation
White Plains, N.Y.
Description:
Candidates should be interested in challenging assignments and
be willing to apply cutting edge technology to the New York Power
Authority’s hydroelectric and fossil generating plants,
and transmission and substation facilities.
Depending on the selected candidate’s knowledge
and experience, focus of the position responsibilities may vary
from: performing technical studies and calculations; preparation of
detailed engineering and design including equipment specifications,
drawings, test procedures, and construction specifications; or
provide technical support to staff at the Operating Facilities on
equipment issues such as failures, outages, repairs, maintenance,
replacement and testing.
For technical study area, the candidate will
plan and perform complete system studies of broad scope and
complexity utilizing specialized software application programs and
tools such as electromagnetic transient program. Calculations of the
power system equipment rating characteristics, analysis of
harmonics, grounding, magnetic and electric fields, system
disturbances, and the root cause of equipment failures are required.
In consultation with the Principal Engineer, preparation of reports
on the studies and analysis will be required.
In design area, the candidate will be
responsible for providing electrical engineering design to support
all Authority generation and transmission facilities. The candidate
will demonstrate competencies in the design and integration of all
classes of electric utility systems and apparatuses. A working
knowledge of a wide range of power station equipment and controls is
required. Typical duties will include ownership of conceptual,
analytical, and final design stages of modification projects, review
of all design documentation, and the ability to administer on-site
construction support, as required. These tasks will often be
accomplished through a lead coordinator function in which the
candidate will assume somewhat autonomous role, possessing the
ability to perform independently without need of significant
managerial or associate guidance. In addition, the individual will
act as the Authority’s design organization representative, serving
as a project liaison between various Authority departments, electric
utilities, and consultant organizations.
Requirements:
To quality for this position, the candidate must have a Bachelor
or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 5
years of applicable experience. A New York State EIT is desirable
or the ability to obtain one in short order. A New York State PE
license is required for the senior level position. The candidate is
expected to be knowledgeable in the applicable current regulations,
codes, industry standards and guides associated with the design of
power plants and transmission system.
Strong oral, written and inter-personal
communications skills are essential to be an effective contributor
on multi-discipline team projects. The candidate should be well
organized, self-motivated, adaptable, and have an innovative and
proactive approach towards identifying and solving problems.
